CS2 Pets

Counter-Strike 2 now has pet chickens. You get an egg, it hatches into a chick, and with enough feed it grows into a hen in one of dozens of colours. Everything on this page — models, colours, icons and text — is pulled straight from the game files.

In short

  • Your chicken's colour comes from its pet seed. Every pet stores a hidden seed and the game derives the colour style from it, so two players raising the same breed usually get different coats.
  • 40 colours across 3 hen breeds — Catalana (15), Silkie (13), Polish (12). Chicks always hatch yellow; the colour shows from the pullet stage.
  • Eggs come from the Weekly Care Package, one pet per account, and pets can't be traded or sold — so there's no market price.

Every chick hatches the same yellow. The colour comes in later.

"Style" is the colour's material-group number on the hen model — the value an inspect link uses to show that exact coat. Coats marked "No style id" have a finished material in the files but aren't wired to a style yet, so they can't be inspected in-game. The game gives no drop odds for colours.

Growing up

Four stages, named in the game's own text. Each has its own model, and more of the photo booth unlocks as the bird grows.

  1. 1

    Egg

    “Your egg will hatch soon.”
  2. 2

    Chick

“Your chick will be a pullet soon. Enjoy the little one, and take some photos.”
  3. 3

    Pullet

“Growing fast, colors coming in, and cleared to deploy with you. Get your photos in now. It won't stay this size for long.”
  4. 4

    Hen

“A full-grown hen. You raised it well. Enjoy your time together.”

Chicken Egg

  • Comes from the weekly rewards — the same Weekly Care Package that hands out feed.
  • One pet per account: the game won't let you claim an egg while you already own a pet.
  • Each egg has its own hatch date, shown on the item and counted down in the HatchBook.
  • Neglected eggs can expire before they ever hatch.

How it ends

A Life Well Lived
  • “Your pet has reached the end of a long, loud life. Nothing left to do but wave.”
  • “You raised it well enough that it doesn't need you anymore. You can revisit your times together from your profile card.”
Retirement
  • “Your pet has accepted a position elsewhere. The offer included meals.”
  • “Turns out chickens need food. Who knew?”
  • “In your defense, it never once complained.”
Unhatched
  • “Your egg has been moved to a warmer nest.”
  • “Never loved. Never hatched. Those two are related.”
  • “It was going to be your chicken. But you apparently had other plans.”

The game's own notifications: one for a pet that lived its full life, one for a pet that ran out of food, one for an egg that never hatched.

The booth checks your bird's stage before it lets you pick certain poses: “Not old enough for this dangerous pose.” · “Not old enough, this pose requires a little more maturity.” · “Got too big for this pose” · “Not old enough, these can be scary for young ones.” · “Not old enough, unless your pet has faced worse.” · “Not old enough to pull off these tricks.”

The HatchBook

Your pet's scrapbook. Each chapter asks for specific photos, and the game writes a caption for every page — picked from eight per page.

Chapter · Chick
Your chick, zoomed out

“You made your grand entrance into the world through the aggressive headbutting of a perfectly good calcium sphere.”

+ 7 more captions
  • “Day one. You weighed less than a flashbang and were roughly twice as loud.”
  • “These are your feet, actual size. I am legally obliged to tell you they will not be staying that way.”
  • “Two feet, no armor and no plan. It will be a long while before either of us takes you anywhere dangerous.”
  • “Somewhere under all that fluff were two of the most ridiculous feet I have ever seen. Exhibit A.”
  • “Your entire arrival strategy was to hit one thing repeatedly until it broke. You have not changed.”
  • “Smaller than my hand, louder than my headset. We got off to a wonderful start.”
  • “Before the hats and the road trips and the stray bullets, you were this. Two feet and an attitude.”
Your chick, up close

“Big green world, very small peep.”

+ 7 more captions
  • “Attempted flight. Results pending.”
  • “Not cleared for the field just yet.”
  • “Basic training. Emphasis on basic.”
  • “The grass put up more of a fight.”
  • “Cleared the flowerbed. No survivors.”
  • “A whole park, thoroughly inspected.”
  • “Small bird, strong opinions on leaves.”
Your chick in your hands

“Just a giant and their new three-ounce, bug-hungry sidekick.”

+ 7 more captions
  • “One of you has a plan. It is not the one with the feathers.”
  • “A future teammate, currently about the size of a grenade.”
  • “The beginning of a partnership neither of you agreed to.”
  • “A giant, a chick, and absolutely no chain of command.”
  • “Small enough for one hand. Does not consider that relevant.”
  • “Two species, one questionable idea, off to a running start.”
  • “Held very carefully, by someone who has never held a bird.”
Chapter · Pullet
Your pullet in the warehouse

“The fluff is gone, and your colors are finally showing. You're looking field-ready. I'm glad you're getting familiar with the gear that's going to be gunning for you.”

+ 7 more captions
  • “Old enough to come to work with me now. Try not to touch anything in here. Most of it is louder than you are, and none of it was built with chickens in mind.”
  • “You have grown into the kind of bird that can follow me onto a map. The crates in here are full of things that go bang, so please give them the respect they never earned.”
  • “First day on site. You spent most of it inspecting a crate of grenades with the serene confidence of somebody who has absolutely no idea what they do.”
  • “The fluff went somewhere. In its place: feathers, opinions, and just enough size that nobody now questions why there is a chicken in the staging area.”
  • “They let you into the warehouse. Nobody signed off on it and nobody objected, and within a minute you had claimed the highest crate in the room as yours.”
  • “You are officially old enough to be shot at. I want it on the record that this was not my idea, and that you seem genuinely delighted by the news.”
  • “Big enough for the field at last. All this gear will outlast the pair of us, and you have decided the best thing about any of it is the smell.”

“Your first trip. You mostly stayed clear of stray bullets, and saw things no bird should ever see. Remember, trauma builds character! Go peck at some crumbles and shake off the shell-shock.”

+ 7 more captions
  • “Your first away game. You watched a bomb get planted and did not flinch, which worries me more than if you had. Perfectly normal! Go and stand in the sun until it wears off.”
  • “Out of the warehouse at last. You saw daylight, gunfire, and a grown man reloading with his eyes shut. All part of the experience! Have a crumble. You have earned it.”
  • “Your first proper trip. Somebody threw a grenade and you ran straight at it, because of course you did. We will work on that. Go and sit somewhere quiet for a while.”
  • “Two stops, one very small passenger. You slept through most of the gunfire and woke up for the parts that mattered. Excellent instincts! Go and find some shade and a bug.”
  • “First time off the property. You saw places that only ever get named in reports, and left feathers in all of them. Nothing we cannot explain. Go and have a long drink of water.”
  • “Your first tour. You have now been shot at in two different countries, which is two more than most chickens manage. One for the grandchildren! Go and rest those feet.”
  • “New places, same bird. You inspected every crate, ignored every warning sign, and came home entirely intact. Beginner's luck. Go and eat something before you fall over.”
Chapter · Hen
Your hen in your arms or eye to eye

“You used to fit in one hand. Now it takes both arms.”

+ 7 more captions
  • “The quiet one. No hats, no tricks, no audience.”
  • “You sat still for this. It took some negotiating.”
  • “Full grown, fully capable of that kick, and still willing to be held.”
  • “Four seconds. That is the window, and I use all of it.”
  • “A hen your size should not be portable. Nobody has told you.”
  • “Eye to eye for once, and neither of us blinked first.”
  • “Whatever you are out there, in here you are still mine.”

  • “I AM LISTED AS A KNOWN ASSOCIATE”
  • “DESCRIPTION: SMALL, ARMED, UNBOTHERED”

  • “LAST KNOWN ADDRESS: THE TOP OF ME”
  • “IF FOUND, DO NOT RETURN. YOU KNOW THE WAY”
Your hen kicking or flying. Lightning optional.

“You have opinions now, and the footwork to back them up.”

+ 7 more captions
  • “Not so long ago you could not reliably clear a shoelace.”
  • “The kick is real. I have seen it applied to a crate, and I have seen the crate lose.”
  • “Flight, technically. Gravity was involved, but so was intent.”
  • “Whatever this is, you practiced it. That is the unsettling part.”
  • “You have worked out what your legs are for. I liked it better when you had not.”
  • “Airborne. Briefly, and entirely on purpose. The results are in.”
  • “Nothing about you is subtle any more. I have made peace with it.”
Your hen mid-jump, in a party hat. Confetti and sparks optional.

“I'm not entirely sure how chicken aging translates to human years, but you're officially a veteran today. Slap a birthday sticker on your plumage, and let's go make some memories.”

+ 7 more captions
  • “I have zero clue how poultry age works, but you've definitely leveled up. Here's to getting older, surviving our teammates' terrible flashbangs.”
  • “I still don't know the conversion rate for bird years, but congratulations on not becoming collateral damage yet. Happy hatch-day.”
  • “Whatever the math is for chicken birthdays, you are officially older and your hitbox is thankfully still intact. Here is to another year of surviving the active duty pool!”
  • “I have no idea how poultry math works, but congratulations on surviving another rotation. Here's to dodging more stray bullets and making more chaotic memories.”
  • “I'm not sure if chicken years are measured in days or survived C4 blasts, but happy hatch-day to my favorite tactical sidekick. Cheers to getting older and surviving.”
  • “The exact science of avian aging escapes me, but you are officially older and surprisingly not fried yet. Here is to another year of premium crumbles and unforgettable combat trauma.”
  • “I don't understand bird years, but happy birthday to the best wingman I could ask for. Here is to getting older and collecting more wild memories.”

CS2 pets: frequently asked questions

What pets are in CS2?
Chickens. The game defines five pet entries: the Chicken Egg, the Pet Chick and three adult hen breeds — Catalana, Silkie and Polish. All three hens use the in-game name "Pet Chicken"; the breed only shows in the model.
How many chicken colour variants are there?
41 coats ship in the game files across the three hen breeds plus the chick. Most are numbered colour styles on the hen model (the ones with an inspect link); a few materials exist in the files without a style number yet.
How do you get a chicken egg in CS2?
Eggs come through the weekly rewards (the Weekly Care Package, which is also where pet feed comes from). You can only have one pet at a time: the game refuses to let you claim an egg offer while you already own a pet.
How long does a CS2 chicken egg take to hatch?
Every egg carries its own hatch date, shown on the item as "Hatch Date" and counted down in the HatchBook. When it arrives the egg hatches into a chick, which then grows into a pullet and finally a hen on its own schedule ("next upgrade date").
Do you have to feed your CS2 pet?
Yes. Every pet has a food expiration date. The game warns you when food is running low and points you at the Weekly Care Package for more feed. If the food runs out the pet "retires" and leaves — and an egg that is never looked after can expire unhatched.
Can you trade or sell CS2 pets?
No. The pet item carries the "cannot trade" attribute, so pets have no Steam Market or third-party market price. Each bird belongs to the account that raised it.
What decides which colour my chicken gets?
Each pet stores a "pet seed", and the colour style is derived from it — so two players raising the same breed usually end up with different coats. Chicks all hatch yellow; colours come in at the pullet stage.
What is the HatchBook?
A scrapbook of your pet’s life. It has a chapter per stage (chick, pullet, hen) with photo prompts you fill from the photo booth, and the game writes a caption for each page. Retired pets keep their book, viewable from your profile card.
